Discovering the Provo City Center Temple: A Glimpse into Its History and Features
Nestled in the heart of Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple stands as the 150th dedicated Temple in operation. Situated at 50 South University Ave, it has become a noteworthy part of the fabric of the city. Announced by President Thomas S. Monson during the October 2011 Semiannual General Conference, a transformative journey began for what was once the historic Provo Tabernacle.
Historical Significance
The Provo Tabernacle, a cherished venue in the community, suffered an accidental fire in December 2010. However, rather than seeing this as an end, the Church moved forward with plans to renovate and repurpose the building. Groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 12, 2012, led by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, marking the beginning of a new chapter for this historic site.
A public open house from January 15 to March 5, 2016, drew over 800,000 guests eager to explore the beautifully revamped interior before the official dedication. On March 20, 2016, the dedication was conducted by President Dallin H. Oaks, who expressed gratitude for various righteous activities and institutions that enhance life in the valley.
Architectural Elegance
The Provo City Center Temple exudes beauty with its exterior made of red brick, accentuated by a striking central spire surrounded by four corner spires. At the pinnacle sits a gold-leafed statue of the Angel Moroni, which stands 13 feet tall and was installed for the first time on March 31, 2014. With a total size of 85,084 square feet and a height of 150 feet, this Temple commands attention amidst the bustling business district of Provo.
The layout of the Temple is thoughtfully designed across four levels, featuring a baptistry, three instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, dressing rooms, offices, and a bridal room on the lower levels. The upper levels include the endowment rooms, lobbies, and additional offices, creating a harmonious flow of space.
Modern Amenities
Catering to both functionality and convenience, the Provo City Center Temple includes a basement parking garage that accommodates 245 vehicles, alongside 50 additional parking spaces on the main level. This accessibility makes it easier for individuals and families to visit and enjoy the serene environment surrounding the Temple.
The Victorian Pavilion
Across from the Temple lies a beautiful Victorian pavilion, complete with a basement that connects directly to the Temple’s basement. This charming addition complements the surrounding area and offers an inviting atmosphere.
