Discovering the Provo City Center Temple: A Historical Gem

Introduction

Nestled in the heart of Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple stands as the 150th dedicated Temple in operation within the worldwide Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This architectural marvel boasts a rich backstory and significant cultural and spiritual importance.

A Brief History

The inception of the Provo City Center Temple can be traced back to the announcement made during the Semiannual General Conference on October 1, 2011, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. He beautifully stated, “No Church-built facility is more important than a Temple. Temples are places where relationships are sealed together to last through the eternities.”

The Temple’s history has its roots in a tabernacle that stood proudly until an accidental fire in 2010 led to its destruction. This tragedy paved the way for a significant renovation and the transition into a Temple, starting with the groundbreaking and site dedication on May 12, 2012, by Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland.

Architectural Wonders

Covering 5.6 acres, the Provo City Center Temple features stunning red brick exteriors complemented by classic architectural details, including a central spire surrounded by four corner spires. Topping it all is the magnificent gold-leafed Angel Moroni, a striking figure that adds elegance and meaning to the skyline.

Occupying a total size of 85,084 square feet and standing at a height of 150 feet, the Temple offers four levels—two above ground and two below. The lower levels house the baptistry, dressing rooms, offices, and a bridal room. The upper levels include endowment rooms, sealing rooms, lobbies, a chapel, and additional offices.

The Provo City Center Temple Experience

Before its dedication, the Provo City Center Temple hosted a public open house from January 15th through March 5th, 2016, allowing over 800,000 individuals to explore its beautiful interiors. Finally, it was dedicated on March 20, 2016, by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks, who expressed gratitude for the educational institutions and community efforts within the valley.

A unique feature of the Provo City Center Temple is the Victorian pavilion located across from it. This charming structure has a basement that connects directly to the Temple’s own basement, enhancing the overall layout of the area. Additionally, the Temple features a basement parking garage accommodating 245 vehicles, along with 50 more spots at ground level.
