Nestled in the heart of Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple stands as the 150th dedicated Temple in operation. Located at 50 South University Avenue, this architectural marvel spans an impressive 5.6 acres and was dedicated on March 20, 2016, by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks.
A Brief History
The story of this Temple began with an announcement by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the semiannual General Conference on October 1, 2011. He emphasized the significance of Temples in the lives of members, stating, “First, may I mention that no Church-built facility is more important than a Temple.”
In 2010, the original tabernacle on the site suffered an accidental fire, prompting a significant renovation. This historic building once hosted General Conference sessions in October 1886 and April 1897. The renovation transformed it into the stunning Provo City Center Temple we see today.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 12, 2012, led by Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, marking the beginning of a new chapter in this location’s rich history.
Architectural Features
The Provo City Center Temple features a gorgeous exterior crafted from red brick and boasts a striking architectural design. Central to its beauty is a tall spire, elegantly surrounded by four corner spires, crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni, which stands 13 feet tall and was placed atop the Temple on March 31, 2014.
With a total size of 85,084 square feet and rising to a height of 150 feet, this Temple includes four levels—two above ground and two below. The lower levels house the baptistry, dressing rooms, and offices, along with a bridal room. The upper levels include endowment rooms, sealing rooms, lobbies, and additional offices.
Public Engagement
Prior to its dedication, the Temple opened its doors for a public open house from January 15 to March 5, 2016, allowing more than 800,000 people the opportunity to tour its beautiful interior. This event not only highlighted the architectural splendor but also offered a glimpse into the efforts made to create a welcoming environment.
Amenities and Accessibility
Accessibility to the Provo City Center Temple has been well thought out. The basement parking garage accommodates 245 vehicles, alongside an additional 50 parking spots on the main level. This convenience makes it easier for attendees and the surrounding neighborhood to access the Temple.
Across from the Temple lies a Victorian pavilion with a basement that connects to the Temple’s own basement, enhancing its community-friendly design.
