Discovering the Provo City Center Temple: A Gem in Utah
Located at 50 South University Ave, Provo, Utah 84601, the Provo City Center Temple stands as the 150th dedicated Temple in operation within the Church. This architectural marvel, completed just a few years ago, beautifies the landscape of Provo and pays homage to the region’s rich history.
A Brief History
The journey of the Provo City Center Temple began on October 1, 2011, when the announcement was made by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the Semiannual General Conference. He emphasized the significance of Temples, stating, “No Church-built facility is more important than a temple.” This underscores the role these sacred spaces play in creating lasting relationships.
The Temple’s site was officially dedicated and ground was broken on May 12, 2012, by Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland. The announcement followed a tragic event: in 2010, a fire consumed what was previously the Provo Tabernacle. Thankfully, this led to a significant renovation and repurposing of the building into the Temple we see today.
Architectural Features
Spanning 85,084 square feet and set on 5.6 acres, the Provo City Center Temple showcases a stunning red brick exterior. Its most striking feature is a central spire encircled by four smaller spires, topped off by a gold-leafed statue of the Angel Moroni, which was placed on March 31, 2014.
Inside, the Temple boasts three instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The layout features four levels, with two above ground and two below. The lower areas include the baptistry, dressing rooms, and offices, while the upper floors house endowment rooms, sealing rooms, and a chapel.
The Public Open House & Dedication
Before the Temple was officially dedicated, a public open house ran from January 15 to March 5, 2016, allowing over 800,000 individuals to tour the beautifully renovated interiors. The dedication took place on March 20, 2016, with Prophet Dallin H. Oaks leading the ceremony. During this event, Oaks praised the educational efforts in the valley, voicing gratitude for institutions like Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University.
Location and Community Impact
Nestled in Provo’s business district, the Temple is positioned conveniently with a basement parking garage that offers 245 spaces, along with an additional 50 spots on the main level.
Directly across from the Temple lies a Victorian pavilion that shares a basement connection with the Temple’s own lower level, serving to enhance accessibility and community connectivity.
