Located at 50 South University Ave, Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple stands as the 150th dedicated Temple in operation within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its striking appearance and rich history make it a noteworthy destination for many.
A Historic Journey
Announced on October 1, 2011, during the Semiannual General Conference, the vision for this location was articulated by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson. He expressed, “First, may I mention that no Church-built facility is more important than a temple. Temples are places where relationships are sealed together to last through the eternities.” This proclamation set the stage for what would become a pivotal development in Provo.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 12, 2012, led by Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland. Following years of construction and meticulous renovation, the public open house occurred from January 15 to March 5, 2016, drawing over 800,000 attendees eager to tour the interior before its formal dedication.
A Testament to Beauty and Functionality
The Provo City Center Temple was dedicated on March 20, 2016, by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks, who highlighted the importance of the Temple in his dedicatory prayer. Spanning an impressive 85,084 square feet and standing 150 feet tall at an elevation of 4,547 feet, the Temple is hard to miss in Provo’s bustling business district.
Its architectural design showcases red brick exteriors and features a central spire flanked by four corner spires, topped with a gleaming, gold-leafed Angel Moroni, which was elegantly installed on March 31, 2014. The statue stands 13 feet tall and adds a majestic touch to the skyline.
Facilities Designed for Purpose
Inside the Provo City Center Temple, you can find three instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The layout includes four levels—two above ground and two below. The lower levels accommodate the baptistry, dressing rooms, offices, and bridal room, while the upper levels house endowment rooms, sealing rooms, lobbies, and additional offices.
Accommodating visitors and participants alike, a basement parking garage with 245 spots invites ease of access, complemented by 50 additional parking spots on the main level.
A Legacy of Resilience
It’s worth noting that before it was transformed into a Temple, the site was home to a tabernacle that significantly impacted the local religious landscape. Tragically, an accidental fire in 2010 led to its destruction. However, this setback paved the way for a new beginning, allowing for the extensive renovations that would ultimately lead to its current status as a Temple.
