Nestled in the vibrant heart of Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple is the 150th dedicated Temple in operation, serving as a significant cornerstone in the region. Located at 50 South University Ave, this remarkable edifice reflects both historical reverence and architectural beauty.
A Brief History
The story of the Provo City Center Temple began on October 1, 2011, during the Semiannual General Conference when Prophet Thomas S. Monson announced its construction. He emphasized the importance of these sacred spaces, noting, “First, may I mention that no Church-built facility is more important than a Temple.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the hearts of those who appreciate the rich traditions associated with these locations.
On May 12, 2012, the site was officially dedicated and groundbreaking took place under the direction of Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland. However, the journey to its present form was marked by a tragic event—a fire in 2010 that resulted in the loss of the original tabernacle. Despite this setback, renovation transformed the site into the magnificent Temple it is today.
Architectural Excellence
Boasting an impressive 85,084 square feet of space, the Provo City Center Temple is adorned with red brick and features distinctive architectural styles that stand out against the Utah skyline. Its central spire, surrounded by four corner spires, rises to a height of 150 feet, topped with a striking 13-foot Angel Moroni statue, which was placed on March 31, 2014.
The building itself encompasses four levels, with two above ground and two below. The lower levels house the baptistry, dressing rooms, offices, and bridal room, while the upper levels include the endowment rooms, sealing rooms, lobbies, and chapel. This thoughtful arrangement ensures a serene and inspiring environment.
Significant Events
The public had an opportunity to explore the interior from January 15 to March 5, 2016, when over 800,000 individuals toured the Temple before its dedication, highlighting the excitement and anticipation surrounding this new establishment in Provo’s bustling business district. On March 20, 2016, the Temple was dedicated by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks, who expressed gratitude for the educational efforts in the valley, including those of nearby Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University.
Accessibility and Amenities
The Provo City Center Temple is situated on 5.6 acres and features a basement parking garage with 245 spots, complemented by 50 additional spots on the main level. This thoughtful planning allows for convenient access for those who come to engage with the sacred offerings of this grand space.
Directly across from the Temple, a charming Victorian pavilion connects to its basement, providing a seamless transition between the two locations.
