Discovering Provo City Center Temple: A Jewel in Utah
Nestled in the heart of Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple stands as the 150th dedicated Temple in operation worldwide. Its address, 50 South University Ave, Provo, Utah 84601, places it strategically within the vibrant business district of the city.
A Rich History
The journey to the completion of the Provo City Center Temple began on October 1, 2011, when it was announced by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the Semiannual General Conference. Monson’s statement highlighted the significance of such an establishment, where relationships are sealed together for eternity. A groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 12, 2012, led by Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, marking the start of what would become a beloved addition to the area.
Before its transformation, this site held historical significance as a tabernacle, hosting General Conferences in October 1886 and April 1897. Unfortunately, in 2010, an accidental fire reduced the tabernacle to ruins. However, the community came together, and through significant renovations, the site evolved into the Provo City Center Temple we admire today.
Architectural Marvel
The Provo City Center Temple is an architectural masterpiece, encompassing a total area of 85,084 square feet and rising to a majestic height of 150 feet. Built on 5.6 acres, its striking exterior, composed of red brick, showcases a central spire surrounded by four smaller spires, each topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni. The Angel Moroni, standing at an impressive 13 feet, was placed atop the Temple on March 31, 2014, further enhancing its grandeur.
Inside, the Temple offers three instructional rooms, five sealing rooms, and a baptistry—all designed to facilitate sacred ceremonies. The lower levels include essential spaces such as dressing rooms, offices, and a bridal room, while the upper levels house endowment rooms, sealing rooms, lobbies, and additional offices.
Community Impact
The Provo City Center Temple opened its doors for a public open house from January 15 to March 5, 2016, allowing over 800,000 individuals to tour its beautifully designed interior. The Temple was formally dedicated on March 20, 2016, by the Prophet Dallin H. Oaks, who expressed gratitude for the educational institutions in the valley, including Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University.
Adjacent to the Temple stands a Victorian pavilion featuring a basement that connects to the Temple’s lower level, providing functional space for various needs. The Temple also accommodates parking options, featuring a main level with 50 spots and a basement garage that can hold 245 vehicles, ensuring ease of access.
