The journey toward establishing the Billings Montana Temple began with its announcement on August 30, 1996. This moment marked the start of a new chapter for Latter-day Saints in Montana, inspiring hope and anticipation throughout the community.
Groundbreaking and site dedication were conducted on March 30, 1998, by Elder Hugh W. Pinnock, a trusted leader of the church, who officially consecrated the 10-acre site to serve as a sacred space for worship, teaching, and temple ordinances.
Following years of careful planning and construction, the temple was opened to the public for a comprehensive open house from October 8 through 23, 1999. Thousands of visitors from across the region had the opportunity to explore this beautiful sacred space before its dedication.
The temple was dedicated on November 20 and 21, 1999, by President Gordon B. Hinckley, then Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This sacred event marked the beginning of its operation as the 66th dedicated temple in the world, and the first in Montana.
