The Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple is an exceptional architectural and cultural landmark that confidently stands as a testament to a remarkable history and vision. Announced on October 3, 2009, this impressive edifice began its journey with a groundbreaking on July 18, 2011, officiated by Walter F. Gonzalez. After much anticipation, the temple opened its doors to the public from March 19 to April 19, 2014, culminating in its dedication by Dieter F. Uchtdorf on May 4, 2014.
Situated on a beautiful 16.82-acre site in Davie, the temple features an eye-catching precast concrete exterior and a striking 99-foot spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni. Inside, it houses two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry— all enveloped within 30,500 square feet of sacred space. The artistic motifs throughout the temple capture the essence of Florida’s vibrant landscapes, showcasing sun and palm tree designs that harmonize with timeless Neoclassical architectural elements like grand arches and majestic columns.
The intriguing history of the land adds another layer of significance. Originally intended for a middle school in 2003, the project was ultimately abandoned by the Broward County School Board in 2009. That’s when the Church stepped in with a vision to acquire the site, clearing a path for the temple’s construction. Following the appropriate amendments and payments, the zoning shifted from community facility to accommodate this spiritual haven, all while leaving room for future residential development.
Strategically located just north of Griffin Road and Interstate 75, with the Robbins – Vista View Trail bordering it along Shotgun Road, the Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple serves as a vital place of worship and a serene retreat for the community. Its striking design and rich history contribute to its stature as a centerpiece in the spiritual landscape of South Florida. This temple is not merely a destination; it is a beacon of inspiration and tranquility, inviting all to experience its profound significance.
