The journey of the Hartford Connecticut Temple began when it was announced to the public on October 2, 2010, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during a General Conference. Following this announcement, the groundbreaking and dedication of the site took place on August 17, 2013. Initially, plans for a Temple in Hartford were discussed at a General Conference 18 years prior, but these were set aside as the focus shifted to temples in Boston, Massachusetts, and White Plains, New York, known today as the Harrison New York Temple. The construction of the Hartford Connecticut Temple was eventually prioritized, leading to its dedication.
Open House and Dedication
After construction was completed, a public open house was held from September 30 to October 22, 2016, allowing individuals to explore the Temple’s offerings. The Hartford Connecticut Temple was dedicated on November 20, 2016, by Apostle Henry B. Eyring, who remarked, “As we reach for the eternal, we will find the Lord reaching toward us.”
Architectural Features
The Hartford Connecticut Temple spans 32,246 square feet and is built on 11.3 acres at a height of 117.2 feet, sitting at an elevation of 179 feet. Its exterior is adorned with granite, giving it a dignified appearance. One of the most striking features is the single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue.
Interior Design Elements
Throughout the interior, artistry abounds. The stained glass features a classic design inspired by historic divided light fixtures, showcasing elegant geometric lines and delicate floral motifs. Original wall murals painted by local artist Brad Aldridge depict the natural beauty of the Connecticut countryside, further emphasizing the region’s lush scenery and history.
Light Fixtures and Finishes
The interior boasts exquisite light fixtures. The second instruction room highlights shades made of hand-blown crystal, while the celestial and sealing rooms are adorned with chandeliers designed by Schonbek of New York City, constructed from brass and Austrian Swarovski crystal. Entryways and the baptistry feature modified Georgian-style fixtures crafted by FFKR Architects.
The doors of the Hartford Connecticut Temple are an innovative blend of craftsmanship, made of charter oak, with both interior and exterior door hardware fashioned from brass. The railings surrounding the baptismal font are also made of brass, contributing to the overall elegance of the Temple.
The Hartford Connecticut Temple is not only the first Temple in Hartford City but also the first in Hartford County and across the state of Connecticut, marking a significant milestone in the region’s spiritual and cultural landscape.
