The Houston Texas Temple stands as a magnificent testament to faith and community. Announced on September 30, 1997, the temple has since become a cherished spiritual landmark in the heart of Houston. The groundbreaking ceremony on June 13, 1998, led by Lynn A. Mickelsen, marked the beginning of an important journey for many local faithful.
After almost two years of dedication and hard work, the public was invited to explore the beauty of the Houston Texas Temple during its open house from August 5 to 22, 2000. It was a time of excitement and anticipation, culminating in the temple’s dedication by the late Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley over the weekend of August 26-27, 2000. This sacred event brought together members from across the region, who were eager to celebrate a place where they could deepen their faith.
The temple, built on 11 acres, features stunning architectural elements, including a single attached end spire adorned with a gold-leafed angel Moroni, a symbol of the Church’s commitment to sharing the gospel. With an exterior finished in elegant Luna Pearl Granite, the temple stands tall at 159 feet, providing a striking presence against the Houston skyline. Inside, it houses two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all within its spacious 33,970 square feet.
In April 2018, the temple was rededicated by M. Russell Ballard, reaffirming its spiritual significance to the community. Serving twenty-eight stakes in the Houston area, the temple blesses the lives of countless members, who had previously traveled five hours to reach the nearest temple in Dallas.
A notable moment during the groundbreaking ceremony was when Elder Christofferson spoke on themes of humility and personal reflection, challenging attendees to consider what changes they might make in their lives. The profound question, “What will make each of us more holy as we enter the temple doors?” resonates with many who seek to deepen their spirituality.
Accompanying Elder Christofferson at the ceremony was Don Hand, a pivotal figure in the temple’s history. As the former landowner of the site, Mr. Hand faced immense financial strain in the mid-1980s. During that difficult time, he prayed for guidance and made a promise to the Lord, ultimately finding himself spared from bankruptcy. Years later, upon hearing of the Church’s intent to build a temple, his heart softened, and he recognized this as an opportunity to fulfill his long-held commitment.
Mr. Hand’s journey began with a vision for the area, having originally purchased 2,000 acres and painting a picture of its future grandeur. Even when the property was on the market, when President Hinckley visited, it seemed unobtainable. However, through persistent discussions about its intended use, Mr. Hand realized that selling the property for the temple was a chance to fulfill his promise to the Lord—a moment that forever changed the landscape of Houston.
The Houston Texas Temple remains a haven for spiritual growth, drawing members from across the region, offering a space for reflection, connection, and worship. Its construction story is a powerful reminder of faith, sacrifice, and the divine guidance that can lead to beautiful outcomes.
