The Ogden Utah Temple is an important Temple and the 14th dedicated temple in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was announced on August 24, 1967, marking the beginning of a significant project in the region. The site was dedicated on September 8, 1969, by Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer, with the groundbreaking occurring on the same day under the direction of Hugh B. Brown.
The temple first opened to the public for an open house from December 16-30, 1971, attracting a remarkable 181,000 visitors eager to explore its sacred spaces. Following this, the temple was dedicated from January 18-20, 1972, by Joseph Fielding Smith, solidifying its purpose as a place of worship and service.
In 2014, the temple underwent a significant renovation and held a second open house from August 1 to September 6. It was rededicated on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, highlighting the ongoing importance of the temple to the community.
Situated on 9.96 acres in downtown Ogden, the temple features an exterior made of granite quarried and fabricated in China. One of its architectural highlights is a single central spire crowned with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni. The temple encompasses 112,232 square feet, which includes six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and a baptistry, providing essential spaces for various ordinances.
The Ogden Utah Temple reaches a height of 188 feet and 8 inches and is located at an elevation of 4,299 feet. Its beautifully designed landscape includes water features, diverse tree plantings, and well-maintained grounds that create a serene environment for visitors.
Notably, the Ogden Utah Temple is the fifth temple built in Utah and holds the distinction of being the first dedicated in the state, occurring 80 years after the initial four temples were consecrated while Utah was still a territory. A significant moment during its dedication was when Prophet Harold B. Lee completed the dedicatory prayer after Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith, who had been standing for an extended period, needed assistance.
