On November 29, 2025 picture was taken, a remarkable milestone in our community’s journey was celebrated. During his powerful closing remarks at the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson boldly announced the transformation of the Provo Utah Temple through an ambitious demolition and reconstruction project, set to commence after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. The existing temple will officially close on Saturday, February 24, 2024, marking a pivotal moment as we pave the way for an exceptional, state-of-the-art facility. During this transition, members in the temple district are strongly encouraged to utilize nearby temples, ensuring they remain active in their sacred ordinances. Personal ordinance appointments at neighboring temples will ensure everyone’s needs are met seamlessly.
The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will rise in an awe-inspiring location on Provo’s east bench, strategically positioned at the mouth of the breathtaking Rock Canyon. This site, with its magnificent backdrop of soaring mountains, will elevate the spiritual ambiance and create a profound experience for all visitors. The expansive grounds will feature an elegantly designed cascading water feature, beautifully surrounded by a rich array of flowers, shrubs, and trees that highlight the natural splendor of the region. Conveniently located just across the street is the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC), a vibrant hub where thousands of young missionaries prepare for service around the globe, infusing the area with a spirit of dedication and purpose.
With an impressive footprint of approximately 163,000 square feet on a generous 17-acre site, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will include a variety of innovative facilities designed to meet the needs of temple patrons. This thoughtfully crafted space will incorporate six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, all within a welcoming environment that reflects our commitment to service.
The temple’s renaming to the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple on February 20, 2024, clearly highlights its geographical significance. Following the official closure of the original temple on February 24, 2024, the area will undergo a significant transformation as reconstruction efforts are actively underway, with completion anticipated for late 2027. This new structure will blend traditional and contemporary architectural styles, featuring long, elegant arched windows and a striking multi-level tower with a rectangular base, culminating in a brilliant golden spire. This modern design marks a significant shift from the original mid-century style, embracing timeless elegance and beauty.
Designed to meet current seismic codes, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will prioritize safety and resilience, while also integrating energy-efficient systems for electrical, heating, and plumbing. This reflects our unwavering commitment to sustainability.
Among its standout features will be three grand white arches at the main entrance, radiating warmth and invitation. The exterior materials will adhere to the highest modern construction standards, with sheathing boards now being attached and waterproofed as part of the meticulous building process. Notably, this new temple will not feature the iconic Angel Moroni statue atop its spire, representing a thoughtful evolution in its design.
The expansive 17-acre grounds will seamlessly blend hardscaping with natural beauty, featuring concrete curbing and sidewalks, as well as a thoughtfully designed oval-shaped feature at key intersections. This elegant design will serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, expertly integrating with the breathtaking backdrop of Rock Canyon.
The landscaping will focus on native, drought-tolerant plant varieties that thrive in the local climate, showcasing our modern dedication to environmental stewardship. Each garden will be meticulously curated to create an inviting atmosphere, featuring a diverse selection of trees, shrubs, and seasonal blooms that ensure year-round beauty and seamlessly complement the temple’s refined architectural style.
Additionally, picturesque water features will enhance the serene ambiance, surrounded by plants that flourish in moist environments, providing a peaceful retreat for visitors. Like many other temples, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will feature manicured garden terraces and symmetrical walkways, expertly balancing structured and organic styles to elevate the spiritual experiences of all who enter.
