In his uplifting closing remarks during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson shared thrilling news about the Provo Utah Temple. It’s set to undergo a remarkable transformation through demolition and reconstruction, kicking off after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. The current temple’s last day of service will be Saturday, February 24, 2024, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter. During this transition, local members are encouraged to visit nearby temples to continue participating in sacred ordinances.

The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be beautifully situated on Provo’s east bench, right at the entrance to Rock Canyon, where it’ll enjoy breathtaking mountain views. Its grounds will come to life with a captivating cascading water feature amid a variety of vibrant flowers, shrubs, and trees, celebrating the natural beauty of the region. Just across the street is the Provo Missionary Training Center, a hub of energy and purpose where countless young missionaries prepare to serve around the world.

Spanning approximately 163,000 square feet across 17 acres, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple’s thoughtful design will include six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, all crafted to create an inviting atmosphere for all patrons. The renaming of the temple on February 20, 2024, will usher in celebration as the original structure closes on February 24, 2024, and is eventually demolished. With construction currently in progress, the anticipated completion is set for late 2027. This new temple will blend traditional elegance with contemporary aesthetics, featuring stunning, elongated arched windows and a striking multi-level tower topped by a gleaming spire, marking a delightful departure from its mid-century modern predecessor.

Designed with safety in mind, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will adhere to current seismic codes and incorporate energy-efficient systems, highlighting a strong commitment to sustainability. One of its standout features will be the three grand white arches at the entrance, radiating warmth and hospitality, while the exterior materials will meet modern construction standards, ensuring durability.

The expansive 17-acre grounds will beautifully combine hardscaping with aesthetic features, such as an oval-shaped design at key intersections, enhancing both practicality and visual appeal against the stunning backdrop of Rock Canyon. The landscaping will focus on native, drought-tolerant plants that flourish in the local climate, promoting environmental stewardship and ensuring vibrant year-round beauty.

Planned water features will amplify the serene ambiance, accompanied by lush gardens and well-structured walkways that enhance the spiritual experience. The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple is poised to be more than just a house of worship; it will be a captivating sanctuary that reflects the beauty of its surroundings and the cherished values of its visitors, promising to be a beloved landmark and a beacon of peace for all.
