A map showing the location of the Hamburg Germany
The Hamburg Germany Temple, located at Wartenau 20 in Hamburg, marks an important addition to the landscape of the Church in Germany. Announced on April 2, 2023, by the Prophet Russell M. Nelson during the April General Conference, this will be the third House of the Lord constructed in the nation.
Historical Context of the Temple
Hamburg, situated approximately 175 miles northwest of Berlin, will soon feature this significant building alongside the existing Frankfurt Germany Temple and the Freiberg Germany Temple. At the time of the announcement, Germany was home to nearly 40,000 Latter-day Saints spread across approximately 150 wards and branches. The Hamburg Germany Temple will be the first temple constructed in the country since reunification, following the dedication of the Freiberg Germany Temple in the former East Germany and the Frankfurt Germany Temple in West Germany.
Early Church Growth in Germany
The history of the Church in Germany began with Jacob Zundel, widely recognized as the first German convert who joined the movement in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1836. Initial attempts to spread the teachings in Germany faced challenges until George P. Dykes arrived in 1851. During that year, he is believed to have baptized the first two converts in Germany on September 15. Elder John Taylor soon accompanied him to Hamburg where, in October 1851, they oversaw the translation of the Book of Mormon into German, published in May 1852.
The Journey Ahead
The Hamburg Germany Temple will occupy 1.4 acres and will be constructed with a granite exterior finish, standing at an elevation of 26 feet. As of now, the temple remains in the planning stages, with no groundbreaking date announced yet. An official rendering of the Hamburg Germany Temple has not yet been released to the public, but anticipation is building within the community.
