Why Mormons Build Temples Mesa Arizona Temple

The Mesa Arizona Temple is a significant and historic landmark, with its journey commencing with its announcement on October 3, 2019. The site was dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, following the groundbreaking ceremony on April 25, 1922. This temple has reached numerous important milestones, including its official dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, also officiated by Heber J. Grant.

Over the years, the Mesa Arizona Temple has provided opportunities for public engagement, including an open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, and its rededication on April 15-16, 1975, under the leadership of Spencer W. Kimball. More recently, the temple welcomed the community during an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, culminating in a rededication on December 12, 2021, conducted by Dallin H. Oaks.

Architecturally, the Mesa Arizona Temple features a flat roof and elegantly sculpted friezes. The facility includes four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery within a substantial area of 75,000 square feet, reaching a height of 53 feet at an elevation of 1,240 feet. The temple is situated on 20 meticulously landscaped acres, with an exterior constructed from concrete reinforced by 130 tons of steel and elegantly faced with glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Located just east of the original Mesa Townsite—historically significant as a settlement by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—the temple anchors a historic district that has maintained its residential character. The grounds feature a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and expansive reflection pools, providing a serene environment for visitors. Each Easter season, the Mesa Arizona Temple hosts “Jesus the Christ,” which is recognized as the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world. During the Christmas season, the grounds are transformed into a captivating Nativity display, enhanced by the illumination from hundreds of thousands of lights.

The Mesa Arizona Temple is distinguished by several notable achievements: it was the first temple constructed in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Originally named the Arizona Temple, it is known for its tradition of delivering the endowment through live acting.

The temple’s intricate friezes depict the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy regarding the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. A substantial renovation began in February 1974, modernizing the temple and adapting its facilities for single-room film presentations of the endowment, thereby enhancing the visitor experience.

The most recent renovation commenced on May 19, 2018, involving critical upgrades to infrastructure and interior design while preserving the historical character of the temple. These enhancements ensure that the Mesa Arizona Temple continues to serve as a respected and cherished landmark for future generations.
