Discovering the Wichita Kansas Temple

The Wichita Kansas Temple, located at 2550 W Harborlight St, Wichita, Kansas 67204, marks a significant milestone in the region’s history. Announced by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during General Conference on April 3, 2022, this Temple serves as the first of its kind in Kansas, reflecting the growing presence and commitment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in this area.

The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on September 7, 2024, officiated by Steven Bangerter. During this ceremony, he expressed a heartfelt prayer: “Please bless us this day that, as we turn this dirt as a symbol of a new beginning, that we may feel Thy Holy Spirit within our hearts as a manifestation of the divine mission of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that we may each feel a new beginning with renewed commitment to live our lives according to His teachings and filled with His love.”

Set on 6.42 acres of land, the Wichita Kansas Temple covers an area of 9,950 square feet and will be a single-story building. This Temple features a single attached central tower without the gold-leafed Angel Moroni, setting it apart in its architectural design. Inside, it includes one instruction room, one sealing room, and a baptistry, all designed to meet the needs of its members.

The elevation of the Temple is 1,327 feet, situating it gracefully within the landscape of Wichita, the most populous city in Kansas. The introduction of the Temple has historical roots; missionaries from the Church first taught the Shawnee and Delaware peoples in the Kansas area back in 1831. Over the decades, Wichita has grown significantly, with its first branch of the Church organized in 1882.

On July 22, 2024, the rendering of the Wichita Kansas Temple was unveiled to the public, providing a glimpse into the vision and design that will soon come to life. The artistic elements of the Temple will feature motifs inspired by the local flora of Kansas, including sunflowers and wheat stalks, reflecting the state’s reputation as the Sunflower State.

The dedication of the Wichita Kansas Temple will be announced at a later date, along with details regarding an open house, inviting members of the Church and others to learn more about its significance.

As the first Temple in Kansas, the Wichita Kansas Temple represents both a spiritual and historical benchmark for the Church in the region. With leaders such as Brian and Linda Rawson as the inaugural Temple President and Matron, the Temple is poised to play an essential role in the lives of its future patrons.
